Everyone wants to know what to wear to work, dress styles almost being beside the point.  If you're like most people, the what to wear to work dress styles are really all you're interested in.  You might not care that much about the specific suit or tie in question as long as you know that it'll get you what you want be that the job, the promotion or anything else in between.

Proper work clothing can mean many different things and the appropriate attire, whether casual, formal or in between, can depend on the situation at hand.  Unless you are absolutely sure what to wear to work dress and that casual clothing is fine with the people you are going to be meeting however, there are usually some good rules that you can use to guide you in the selection of clothing for any situation that you might face.

For starters, let's take a look at the interview.  The interview is going to be your first impression on the person that could be your future boss, so you want it to go extremely well.  If you're not sure what type of clothing is usually worn at the workplace, it's a good idea to make sure that you place your choices on the formal side.

If you show up in a suit and most people wear coloured shirts, you won't damage your reputation in the vast majority of cases.  If you show up in shorts and sandals and everyone else is wearing a suit however, it's pretty much game over before you've even had a chance to open your mouth.

The proper style of dress for your job after the interview is another issue entirely and tackling that issue should be done separately.  Once you've got the job, the good news is that you should have some idea of what people wear to that workplace on a daily basis because you've been there at least once when you did the interview.  If possible, try to get a tour of where you'll be working while you're there but don't be too pushy about it if the person you meet has many other interviews that they need to get through.  If you can get the tour, pay close attention to what your fellow employees are wearing and how they conduct themselves in the workplace.  Then, use this information to guide your own decisions about what you should wear to work.

If you feel nervous when it comes to selecting work clothes, don't worry because you're not the only one.  Sometimes we all feel that life would be easier if people could just accept others and what they wear at face value, but unfortunately we live in a society where people like to jump to conclusions about others based on next to nothing.  People often judge books by their covers in the real world and that is why you need to get your work outfit right in terms of the dress styles that you use.
